Swamp milkweed likes moisture and will tolerate clay soil as well. With a broad native range, Asclepias is a very important plant for the monarch butterfly – it is the host plant essential for the survival of monarch caterpillars, and an important nectar source for mature monarch butterflies. Consider planting several species such as Asclepias tuberosa, A. syriaca, and A. purpurascens to provide plenty of variety for monarchs and non-stop garden color from June to September.
